Hyndsyt is building Witnuss, a pocket-sized device that lets you decide afterward, with proof that the past was not created after the fact.

Significance arrives late.

Human memory is lossy and reconstructive. We forget exact wording, sequence, tone and detail, and eventually whole moments. Yet large parts of our lives still depend on what two people later agree was said.

  An officer tells you to put your phone away. Whatever is said next lives only in two memories.

Today, if you did not think to record beforehand, that piece of reality is simply gone. Witnuss removes that constraint.

A rolling, local memory.

Witnuss keeps a rolling, local audio memory of the world around you: roughly the previous 30 minutes, always, and through Long Memory, the ability to reach back much further. None of it becomes a saved recording unless you decide, after something happens, that the moment matters.

Instead of recording from the moment you realize something matters, it gives you the part that made you realize it mattered in the first place.

The second part is proof.

While its memory is still being overwritten, Witnuss continuously creates cryptographic commitments to the audio, before anyone knows which moment will ever be kept. When you later press save, Witnuss preserves the audio that came before and can demonstrate that it existed before the decision to keep it. We call this proof of anteriority. It is patent pending.

That order matters more as generated and manipulated audio becomes more convincing. A normal audio file can tell you what it contains, but its existence alone does not prove that it came before the decision to produce it. Witnuss is designed to establish that chronology. It does not only say, "here is a recording of what happened." It is designed to show that the audio existed before the person carrying Witnuss pressed to keep it.
